Bodrum Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The Castle of St. Peter in Bodrum with grounds that cover about 30,000 sq metres is the city’s most famous landmark and the symbol of the town. Jutting out between Bodrum’s two harbours it stands on what was once the island of Zefirya. Work on building the castle began in 1402 and it became a symbol of Christian unity against the Ottomans. The Pope decreed that anyone contributing to the construction of the castle in Bodrum would most assuredly be admitted to heaven. Today the castle houses the Underwater Archaeology Museum that exhibits recovered and reassembled shipwrecks, including the world’s oldest known shipwreck discovered in Ulu Burun in 1982.
