The Musée de la Castre has been housed since 1952 in the former Castle of Cannes, a historic monument built on top of the hill of Le Suquet during the 11th and 12th centuries to protect the harbour and bordering coast. Paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and a division on ethnography which includes relics and pieces from literally everywhere in the world. Exotic cultures are commemorated with profound influences from the Pacific Islands, the Marquesas Islands, pre-Columbus North America, ancient Mediterranean, ancient Egyptian and Southeast Asia.
