Wong Tai Sin Temple, on the far north side of Kowloon Peninsula,is Hong Kong's most visited Taoist temple, and a superb illustration of traditional Chinese architectural principles with its riot of colours. The Buddhist shrine is dedicated to a shepherd boy, Wong Tai Sing, who was said to have mastered the art of refining cinnabar into a medicine that could cure all illnesses. The majority of the worshippers, seeking health or even business advice, use a bamboo container in which there are numbered sticks. The worshipper lights a joss stick and kneels before the main altar softly shaking the container until one of the sticks falls out. The number represents a certain fortune, which a soothsayer will interpret for a small fee. There is much more of interest and beauty in the temple grounds that provide insight into the Chinese religion.
